In a few days, the United States will be celebrating Independence Day. Not too long ago, this was a holiday that brought people together, regardless of political or religious affiliation. Now, sadly, it is steeped in controversy.
I don’t deny the unfortunate parts of our history. Every society has an ugly side. But I also refuse to deny the beauty, strength, and courage that has been a part of our national landscape for 245 years. Innovation, religious liberty, and economic opportunities that are so incredible there are people risking their lives to come here.
Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But I, for one, prefer strengthening what we have instead of destroying it and replacing it with a system that has failed time and time again. I will not feel guilty for being born in a time and place where my freedoms are so tremendous that it’s easy to take them for granted. Instead, I feel grateful and blessed.
I love this country. I cringe at our flaws, but I still believe we are an amazing nation with millions of amazing people. We’re losing much of our shine, though. Anger, bitterness, and ingratitude are tearing us apart. We have lost trust in our leaders. We mock one another instead of lifting each other up. This poisonous mindset has to stop.
Ultimately, I believe we need to turn back to God. We need His grace, but He will not force Himself upon us. Let us each repent of our own part in the ugliness. Turn away from name-calling. Stop sharing garbage, but share stories of heroism and compassion. Instead of laughing at our “opponents,” how about praying for them instead?
Nothing will change if we each don’t change ourselves first. I continue to pray for this nation. How can I pray for you?
